March is Save Your Vision Month

By Dr. Susan Keene

While March is Save Your Vision Month, UV Ray Protection is a Year-Round Responsibility

Protect Your Eyes and Look Great with our Maui Jim and Oakley Sunglasses

March is save your vision month but I think every month is save your vision month! For the moment, I’d like to focus on the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation (UV) on our eyes.

UV radiation bombards all of us every day.  It is the stuff of sunshine.  There is no avoiding its’ presence but there are ways we can protect ourselves, especially our eyes from its’ harmful effects while enjoying the pleasures of a nice sunny day.

Most people do not realize that by the age of fifteen, eighty percent of our kids have visible damage to the surface of their eyes. Long term exposure to UV can cause cataracts and macular degeneration in the eyes, as well as skin cancers.  We get exposure to UV rays even on cloudy days. Children’s eyes have less natural protection than adults, and kids are outside up to three times more than adults so this is not just a responsibility for yourself but one for your children as well.

Protection from UV rays is very important. When choosing sunglasses for yourself and your children, look for UV-protection details on the product labels. Choose sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB rays like our Oakleys and Maui Jim sunglasses.  These also happen to be the coolest glasses available so you get to do the right thing for your eyes and look great!  Remember that the color and darkness of sunglasses have nothing to do with the sunglasses' ability to block UV rays.  Also, choose wraparound sunglasses or close-fitting sunglasses with wide lenses that protect your eyes from every angle.

When you take care of your eyes, you can feel free to get outside and enjoy all that a sunny day has to offer.
