What is Low Vision?

Low vision is severe eyesight impairment; specifically, when vision cannot be fully corrected with glasses, contact lenses, medication, or surgery. This can be because eyesight is too poor (usually a 20/70 prescription or worse), or because the eye has a very restricted field of view, resulting in the loss of central vision. Low vision usually results from a serious eye disease or injury.

The most common causes of low vision are age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Since these conditions are often tied to aging, low vision is most common in older adults, although eye or brain injuries and certain genetic disorders can cause low vision at any age.

Patients with low vision can experience central or peripheral vision loss, blurry or hazy eyesight, loss of color contrast, or poor low light sight (sometimes called “night blindness”). This can make daily activities — such as driving, reading, writing, doing housework, watching TV, and even recognizing people — difficult, or even impossible.

Low Vision Treatment

How is Low Vision Treated?

Since vision loss from certain conditions or injuries can’t be corrected, low vision may require significant adjustments to your daily life. Low vision can make you unable to work or function independently, which may lead to feelings of isolation and depression. At Envision Eye Care, we want to assure you that there are manageable ways to alter your habits and still enjoy your life.

Although this condition can make it challenging to perform certain actions, there are resources available to help you accomplish daily tasks. Low vision means that some sight remains intact, after all, and you can make the most of your remaining sight using vision rehabilitation or visual aids.

Make Life with Low Vision Easier

How to Make Life with Low Vision Easier

In addition to low vision therapy and the use of visual aids, there are a number of ways you can make life with low vision a little easier in your home:

  • Install brighter lights
  • Use large-print books
  • Label clothing, medications, and appliances with large lettering
  • Apply high-contrast stripes onto steps to prevent falls

These are just a few of the ways that someone with low vision can remain independent. Based on your individual needs, one of our experienced eye doctors can suggest different ways that you can adapt to low vision and make the most of your remaining sight.

Low Vision Aids

Low Vision Aids

Visual aids are devices that help patients with low vision function by maximizing remaining eyesight. Assistive devices include magnifiers, telescopes, and other tools to enlarge objects to be more visible, along with visual aids to reduce glare and enhance contrast.

At Envision Eye Care, our low vision specialists can help you find the best visual aids for you, based on your personal eyesight and vision goals, by experimenting with what works for you and your daily needs.

Rehabilitation for Low Vision

Vision Rehabilitation for Low Vision

Low vision therapy is like physical therapy for the eyes. The goal of low vision rehabilitation is to help you use your remaining vision as effectively as possible, and therapy will often consist of a combination of at-home and in-office exercises. Low vision therapy helps you manage daily activities and improve your quality of life, and will also instruct you on how to use assistive devices like visual aids.
