Pediatric Eye Exams

Children’s Eye Exams

Yearly kids eye exams are essential

Children need a sharp vision to learn and develop, and regular eye exams for every child are the only way to ensure that all parts of vision are functioning properly. Without crisp, clear, and efficient eyesight, kids will struggle with reading, writing, socializing, and playing sports with coordination. In addition to falling behind academically, your child’s failure to perform at all of these important activities can lead to poor self-esteem and behavioral issues. Altogether, that’s why it’s critical not to neglect booking routine eye exams with a children’s eye doctor near you.

At Envision Eye Care, our eye doctors in Marion, Cedar Bluff, and Bristol, Virginia , offer comprehensive children’s eye exams. Using advanced optometric technologies and techniques, we will evaluate your kid’s entire visual system. Read more about what to expect from your child’s eye exam:

When should I schedule a kid’s eye exam?

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends booking routine eye exams starting from six months old, then again at three years of age, followed by when your child enters elementary school, around age five to six.

After your child’s first eye exam in our Marion, Cedar Bluff, or Bristol, Virginia , eye care center, we will provide personalized instructions about when to return for follow-up appointments. Usually, children who don’t need eyeglasses or contact lenses are advised to return about every two years, and kids who need vision correction or treatment require more frequent eye exams.

How do I know if my child needs a kids’ eye exam immediately?

Signs of a vision problem are often noticeable – if you know what to watch for. The following symptoms are all possible signs of an eye problem that can be treated once it is detected by a children’s eye doctor:

  • Frequent eye rubbing
  • Excessive blinking
  • Inability to hold a steady gaze
  • Squinting, or closing one eye to see
  • Head tilting or turning
  • Wandering eye, or crossed eyes
  • Droopy eyelid
  • Avoidance of reading
  • Short attention span
  • Poor tracking skills

Children and Eye Emergencies

In addition to booking an eye exam if you spot any of the above warning signs, we recommend calling our eye doctor near you in Marion, Cedar Bluff, or Bristol, Virginia , in the event of a kid’s eye emergency. An eye emergency could be an eye infection or any type of eye injury, such as blunt trauma, ocular bleeding, or a black eye from playing sports, or even a corneal scratch from running into a tree branch. Eye allergies are another type of children’s eye emergency that occurs frequently in kids, and our eye doctor can provide treatment to relieve any painful symptoms. In sum, if your child has any form of eye irritation – even if you don’t know what caused it – don’t delay, book an urgent eye exam for kids.

What happens during a child’s eye exam?

The tests and procedures performed vary depending on your child’s age, developmental stage, medical eye history, health condition, and personal risk factors. Every kid is unique, and we custom-design our kids’ eye exams accordingly.

The basic parts of a pediatric eye exam include checking:

  • Visual acuity to determine if prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses are needed
  • Binocularity (eye teaming)
  • Tracking skills
  • Accommodation (focusing ability)
  • Peripheral vision
  • Color vision
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Eye health – we will inspect the health condition of inner eye tissues, checking for any signs of disease or abnormality

Does a pediatric eye exam check for a child’s sports vision problem?

Yes, but a basic vision screening test in school (reading the eye chart) does not. A sports vision problem is only detected during a full evaluation of your child’s functional vision, done as part of a comprehensive kids’ eye exam by a qualified eye doctor for children.

In fact, the same types of problems that can interfere with your child’s ability to learn in school can get in the way of playing sports. Signs of an undetected children’s sports vision problem include: when kids are suddenly unenthusiastic about joining sports games, keep missing the ball or the basket, can’t find the other players on the field, and/or practice constantly but don’t improve.
